Essential Spelling

Essential Spelling Learning

Through our writing programme, it became apparent that spelling was an area that children scored quite low in. This also meant that children were less confident and productive in Writing.
Through my Teaching as Inquiry when in discussions with my target students, I learned that all of them wanted to know more words and be better at spelling.
I then incorporated Spelling into our Wednesday programme for my home base class Te Rōpū Whakamanawa.  Children were tested at the beginning of term one and their scores noted.  They then worked throughout the term using their individual test.  We tested again at the beginning of term three and results were shared with the children.

The green shows that that particular list was mastered with the child scoring 100%.
An increase in the amount of green shown, gave students great satisfaction and pride.

The resource is on charts in the class, our our learning site and in student drives.
Students have a choice about which activities they do.  They also have agency with working in books or using online tools.
There is variety in the activities from week to week.

My next steps are to determine where progress is as we head in to term four, ensure that children know what words they need to learn and provide opportunities for them to use them in context and across the curriculum.

• Select teaching approaches, resources, and learning and assessment activities based on a thorough knowledge of curriculum content, pedagogy, progressions in learning and the learners.
